Position: Reference Student Assistant
The Reference Department seeks dependable and self-motivated workers to help staff the reference desk during professionally staffed hours and to take the responsibility for assisting patrons when regular staff is not present. Must be willing to work some night and weekend hours, including extended hours during exams.
Standards of performance:
Provision of reference service in an effective, timely, and courteous manner.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Provides reference assistance to library patrons. If unable to answer question, calls on reference librarian.
- Assists users with the ZSR online catalog, print materials, electronic databases, and other online systems.
- Provides patrons with directional information in locating materials.
- Answers telephone reference questions or refers caller to reference librarian on duty.
- Sorts reference books and non-reference books, loads on book trucks, and shelves reference books.
- Maintains the reference book stacks by shelf reading and shifting materials as required.
- Maintains photocopier and printers in reference area.
- Files loose-leaf materials.
- Checks bibliographies/booklists in the online catalog.
- Performs other tasks as assigned.
- Completes student reference packet in a timely manner.
- Continues to learn and to ask questions while employed in the Reference Department.
Other important things to remember:
- Arrive for work promptly. If you are going to be late, please call (758-5475), email askzak@wfu.edu, or IM askzaklive to inform the Department.
- If you can’t work your shift, you will need to find your own substitute. We will help. Be sure to notify staff of the change and the person who will substitute.
- Reference Department projects have first priority!! You may do your own work after reference tasks have been completed.
- No visitors behind the Reference Desk.
- Please no food at the Reference Desk. Drinks are permitted in approved containers.
- Please do not sit on the countertop behind desk.
- Write down Reference questions you can’t answer in the Reference notebook.
- While working at the desk do not become so involved in a task that you do not look up and provide assistance to library users who are waiting. As you do your own work, please remember to do so quietly. Please no head phones while you are at the desk.
- Limit personal calls and no cell phones.
- Please read Internet Access Policy and ask if you have questions.
