Introduction to microtext
Working in Microtext generally includes assisting patrons, filing fiche and reels of film, occasionally assisting with the processing of new fiche and film, and other projects as assigned. During your first few shifts we will do some training. If you ever have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask Lauren. We’d much rather explain something again rather than lose fiche or film because of misfiling.
There will be a checklist in the “Microtext task log” on your desk. Do one task per hour at work. Follow the instructions on the list; the tasks are normally about ten to fifteen minutes long. If there is no list on the desk, stop by Lauren’s office and see if there is anything that needs to be done. As long as you do your microtext work you can study or use the internet with the rest of your time. Just be sure that patrons know you are available to answer questions!
Please be sure to shelve all loose materials in the box on the desk and on top of the cabinets before leaving from your shift. Also be sure to fill out the task log for your accomplished work. When you leave for the end of your shift (or any other reason) change the neon yellow sign on the desk to be accurate. The first person here and the last person to leave for the day are responsible for opening and closing microtext.
Please ask Lauren if you ever have any questions about anything; she’s here to help!
