Student Assistants

Performance, Evaluation, and Rehiring [edit]

We depend on you to work with a good attitude, performance, reliability, responsibility, and learned skills.

Most of the time student workers do a great job. We normally don’t say anything unless we feel that there needs to be improvement.

This section of the handbook explains our evaluation procedures in the event that you do need improvement.

We will monitor your performance throughout the semester, keeping you informed of your status if we have a concern. If we feel that you are not performing at the standard we think is appropriate you will be given a chance to improve.

On the first occurrence there will be a verbal warning. In the case that you do not make it into work you might have an email warning. On the second occurrence we will schedule a meeting with you to discuss strategies to improve. In the case that there is a third occurrence we will have to ask you not to return.

We are concerned not only with your keeping your shifts and coming to work on time, but also interactions with patrons and accuracy in your work.

We will keep records on file of your work performance. This is how we will keep track of warnings, but also how we keep track of positive job performance. If you use us for job, scholarship, or membership recommendations we can refer to this file. We’re happy to do this. Please don’t hesitate to ask us to do a recommendation for you.

We also want feedback throughout the year: let us know about the department, your schedule, patrons, workers, etc. We like to know if we’re doing something right, but we also like to make sure problems are resolved. We can only correct a situation if we know it exists, and you are key in that role.
