Social Stratification in the Deep South

Hello! My name is Lynn Sutton and I am so glad to be on this trip! In August 2004 I came from Wayne State University in Detroit to be the Director of the Z. Smith Reynolds Library. I met Dr. Smith early in that fall term and remember hearing about this course. I blurted out right away, "I want to go!" and now here I am. My colleague Susan Smith and I are delighted to be here.

I confess to being something of a Martin Luther King junkie. I have a CD of his speeches in my car that I listen to like others listen to music. The first year I came to the library we invited Micah Andrews, Wake Forest football star, to read Dr. King's "Dream" speech. That is still my favorite Wake Forest moment. Image:Micah.jpg

My role in this course is to coordinate the service opportunities with the Hancock County Library System. I visited Hancock County this March in preparation for the trip. It is a truly amazing experience to see the miles and miles of devastated landscape. Hancock County is where Hurricane Katrina came ashore in August 2005. The libraries served as community centers during the crisis and continue to function as information centers for recovery. It is our privilege to offer assistance to them as they try to rebuild their communities. --Dr. Sutton 16:39, 1 May 2007 (EDT)
