Tips and Tricks for Using Flickr
Contents
Logging In to Our Shared Account[edit]
For this course, we have one Flickr account that we all will share. We use the same login and password. If you do not have this information, see Susan and she will give it to you.
- Our account can be accessed by clicking on the Flickr link on the main page of our wiki
- You can also go directly to: http://www.flickr.com/photos/south_2007/
- To edit photos, you must sign in. Click on the Sign In link at the top right corner of the page.
- At the next screen, enter our Yahoo!ID and password. Click the Sign In button:
- Important!! Since we are sharing an account, there is the distinct possibility of overwriting each others' work if you choose to edit the same photo at the same time. Communication can prevent this problem from occurring!
How to Upload a Photo[edit]
You are encouraged to share the digital photos you take during the trip. It is simple to upload them into Flickr to share them with the world!
- Transfer your photos from your digital camera to your laptop using your normal procedure.
- Use Microsoft Photo Editor to crop/edit your photos (Start\Digital Media Tools\Imaging Tools)
- Save the edited photo and name it something meaningful
- The first link on our Flickr page is one to Upload Photos
- At the next screen you will browse to the place on your laptop where you edited the images
- Select those you want to upload
- You can add "global" tags that are descriptive of all the photos in this batch
- Leave the images private. Instructors will review and release them for public viewing!
- Click the upload button
How to Edit Photo Information[edit]
It's easy to edit the Title and Description, as well as add subject tags, comments and notes. And you can send an image directly to our course blog.
Title, Descriptions[edit]
To edit the titles and descriptions on an image, click on the text. It will change to a yellow background and that is your visual cue that you can start typing. Once you have changed the text, click the save button.
Subject Tagging[edit]
Tags are the way other people find your image. You want to create tags that are descriptive of the subject matter in the image. There is no "controlled vocabulary" in Flickr. You can use single words or phrases. If you use a phrase, enclose it in parentheses, as shown in the example below.
To add tags, click on the Add a Tag link (shown in the screen capture at the beginning of this section). A data entry box will appear where you can enter new tags. If you want to reuse tags that others have used in our course already, click on the link Choose from your Tags.
To add them to the list of tags for that image (listed in gray above the data entry box), click on one. It will appear in the data entry box and then you can click the Add button.
Adding Notes[edit]
Often, an image may warrant more detailed description. Flickr has a "note" function that will allow us to point to a detail in an image and describe it specifically.
- Click on an image to go to the individual view (as shown at the beginning of this section).
- Click on Add Note.
- a resizable box will appear that you can drag to the area of the image that you want to describe.
- Size the box to fit the detail.
- Enter text that describes the detail.
- Save the note.
